Standards-Based Grading

Updated: 4/24/26

Standards-Based Grading DocumentBlackridge Elementary is transitioning to a standards-based grading approach. This means that we will be sharing your child's progress in a different way than you may have seen in the past. A 4-point learning scale will be used to indicate progress towards the Utah Core Standards. Each month, your child's teacher will send home individual data notebooks that will report on student progress based on the scale. This will provide a more accurate picture of what your child knows at certain times of the year and areas in which he/she is still working. A performance level of 3 is now considered to be proficient (on grade-level). A 4 is now considered to be highly proficient (above grade-level). It is important to note that the expected timeline for meeting the expectations of each standard is by the end of the school year. If you notice 1s or 2s throughout the school year, it means that your child is still learning that standard. See the video at the bottom of the page for more information.

Performance Levels

  1. Below Proficient - I still need help and support from my teacher to do the simpler parts of the standard.
  2. Approaching Proficient - I am getting close to meeting expectations and can do the simpler parts of the standard independently.
  3. Proficient - I meet the expectations described in the standard and can do them independently.
  4. Highly Proficient - I have a deep understanding of the standard and can demonstrate it in complex ways.

Why the Change?
In the past, grades were an average of all of the scores from the start to the end of a term, which didn't clearly show what your child had learned. The new system focuses on mastery of standards at the end of the term, giving you a clearer picture of your student's understanding.

What if I Have Questions?
Believe it or not, your child is becoming an expert with this! Ask them to explain their Data Notebook to you. Ask them to show you their progress and their learning goals. If you still have questions, reach out to your child's teacher or a school administrator.
